Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away in the role of a carnival barker as a young girl and she was forced to support the family working both as a cook and server. Ruth lived in the poor tenement district of Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. In the midst of only two years in school the young woman left to pursue an acting profession. This was not an easy path to follow. While she was offered an interview in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine but no theater jobs came her way. Her next job was as a "hat check" lady at a club until she decided to quit and moved back to Boston. She made enough money by working as an usher throughout the day, and working at night in the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She studied drama in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
